Medicare help for 65+, in plain English. I test the fine print so you don't have to.
W1N-MED-KING (916) 633-5464TTY 711. Calling this number will get you scheduled with a licensed insurance agent.
Important: We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
The Lab
I help with Medicare Advantage, Part D drug plans, and Medicare Supplement plans. Tap a topic for the basics in plain English. Still confused after? Good news, that's literally my job. Supplement info lives on its own page.
Parts A, B, C, and D
A is hospital. B is doctors and outpatient care. C is Medicare Advantage, a private plan that bundles A and B and often D. D is prescription drugs. That's the whole alphabet.
How Advantage plans work
Medicare Advantage plans are run by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. They cover everything Original Medicare covers, and many include drug coverage. Plans and networks change by county, so we look at what's actually available where you live.
Part D and your prescriptions
Part D covers prescriptions, either as its own plan or built into an Advantage plan. Every plan has its own drug list. The right plan for your neighbor can be the wrong one for you, so we check your actual meds.
Extra Help
Extra Help is a Medicare program for people with limited income and resources that helps with prescription drug coverage. A lot of people who qualify never apply. I can help you apply, and there's no charge for my help.
Medicare and Medicaid together
Some people qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid (Medi-Cal in California). The two programs can work together. Think you might qualify? I can help you apply, and there's no charge for my help.
Turning 65
Your Initial Enrollment Period is 7 months: the 3 months before your birthday month, that month, and the 3 after. Miss it and late enrollment penalties may apply. Call before, not after.
Every fall: Annual Enrollment
Every year from October 15 to December 7, you can switch Advantage plans, switch drug plans, or move between Advantage and Original Medicare. Changes start January 1. Plans can change every year, so it's worth a checkup even if you love yours.
Moved or lost coverage?
Moving, losing other coverage, and certain other life changes can open a Special Enrollment Period, so you're not always stuck waiting until fall.
Leaving a job's health plan
Working past 65 or losing employer coverage comes with its own rules and its own enrollment window. Timing matters here, so let's check yours together.
The Birthday Experiment
Turning 65 soon? Drop in your birthday and I'll calculate your Medicare windows, with real dates.
Your enrollment window
Your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period for Medicare.
Earliest coverage start
If you sign up in the months before your birthday month.
These are estimates based on Medicare's rules for signing up at 65. Working past 65, employer coverage, or being on Medicare early can change your dates, so let's double-check yours together.
The Joke Lab

Why use a broker?
More options, and a real person who answers the phone.
No charge for my help
Working with me doesn't add a fee. You don't pay me anything.
More than one carrier
I compare plans from multiple companies instead of pitching just one.
I stick around
Billing weirdness, a drug that got moved, a question at renewal time. Call me after you enroll too.
Tested on my own family first
Before I help you, I helped them. These are family members who are also my clients, and every review says who's who. Nobody got paid, not even in Thanksgiving leftovers.
"He makes sure that I understand it all."
"I appreciate Frank Hammed's experience, knowledge, and brain so very much. The world of insurance, Medicare, and Advantage vs. Supplement is complicated and confusing to me. It's critical to get everything covered correctly and completely. Frank is so articulate and friendly, helps make sure everything is done, and makes sure that I understand it all. He returns calls and emails in a timely fashion. Thank you, Frank."
Who's the Professor?
I'm Frank Hammed, a licensed insurance agent based in Elk Grove, helping folks make sense of Medicare in California and 26 other states. The lab coat is a costume. The homework I do on your options is real.
I read the fine print, compare what's out there, and explain it like a human. Then you decide.
Got family out of state?
Mom in Florida? Uncle in Texas? I'm licensed in 27 states, so I can help them too.
